Pushkarams: Special wrist bands to restore lost kids, aged people to kin

Vijayawada: The district administration has come up with a novel idea of tying special plastic bands to the wrists of children and elderly people to ensure that they do get lost in the crowd or while taking holy dip during Krishna Pushkarams. The wrist bands will have all information such as contact number and details of the parent/guardian. Students and volunteers will register the details at counters designated for the purpose on all the 12 days of the festival.

Disclosing this at a press conference here on Sunday, joint collector Gandham Chandrudu said 1,500 volunteers drawn from NGOs and NSS will be on the job to provide the special tags to children and the elderly people at the counters to be arranged at Pundit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS), Vijayawada railway station, pushkar nagars and ghats. "We are extending this service free of cost with the help of some sponsors. About10 lakh bands are being readied for the purpose," he added. Chandrudu said the details will be stored in the central database and they will be used to pass on information to relatives if the officials find people lost in the crowd.

Speaking on the allotment of duties allotted to volunteers and employees for pushkaram duty, the joint collector said separate ID cards will be issued to employees and volunteers. The ID cards will be printed in four colours with QR code to avoid duplication and misuse. Yellow colour is allotted to ground staff, green to senior officials, HOD's and ghat in-charges, orange to immediate subordinates of HoDs and blue to volunteers.
